Scalus was a San Francisco–based communication and workflow automation platform designed to help growing companies turn messy back-office work into structured, repeatable processes. Spun out of BackOps and founded by Kristen Koh Goldstein, it targeted finance, HR, and operations teams that needed to scale distributed, often remote, workforces. The product combined task management, process templates, and collaboration in a single workspace, with the goal of replacing email chains and spreadsheets for recurring workflows.
Inside Scalus, every process—like onboarding a new customer, closing the books, or processing an order—could be broken into steps, assigned to specific roles, tracked, and measured. The system emphasized recurring and repeating tasks, visibility into bottlenecks, and clear accountability across teams. It integrated with accounting, time-tracking, and other cloud tools so that activity and data flowed automatically between systems instead of being retyped by staff.
Backed by investors including Google Ventures and Sherpa Capital, Scalus raised around $10 million and positioned itself as “workflow infrastructure” for modern service businesses. Its promise was to let companies standardize how work gets done, bring transparency to complex back-office processes, and give managers a real-time view of where every client, task, and approval stood in the pipeline for fast-growing distributed teams.
