Its core innovation was turning status updates into a live public stream where ideas, events, and reactions could spread instantly.
Over time, Twitter introduced threads, hashtags, trending topics, Spaces (live audio), developer APIs, creator tools, ads infrastructure, and media publishing features. It became especially influential during breaking news events, elections, protests, technology discourse, and niche professional communities such as startup, crypto, and developer ecosystems.
Unlike traditional social networks focused mainly on personal connections, Twitter functioned more like a real-time public layer of the internet, where journalists, founders, governments, brands, researchers, and ordinary users interacted in one shared stream.
In 2022, after acquisition by Elon Musk, the platform began transitioning into a broader “everything app” vision, emphasizing payments, AI, creator monetization, and integrated digital services.
