Mingle was retired after Thoughtworks discontinued development. The cloud service was shut down, and the product left the company’s active commercial portfolio. In 2020, its codebase was released as open source, leaving it as an archived legacy project rather than a live product.
Thoughtworks Mingle was an agile project management platform created by Thoughtworks in 2007. It was designed for software teams that wanted more flexibility than traditional task trackers and more structure than a plain wiki or spreadsheet. Mingle combined project planning, card-based workflow management, team collaboration, and reporting in one system. It was used to manage backlogs, visualize delivery flow, track stories and defects, and adapt processes to different agile styles rather than forcing every team into a rigid template. Thoughtworks positioned it as a tool for teams practicing Agile, Lean, and continuous improvement, including distributed teams that needed a shared operational view of work. At one stage, it was also offered as a cloud product, making adoption easier for organizations that did not want to host it themselves. Over time, however, the market shifted. Competition from faster-growing work management platforms increased, and Mingle gradually faded from Thoughtworks’ active product lineup. Thoughtworks later announced that Mingle development had been discontinued, that the cloud version was no longer available, and that the codebase had been open sourced. In effect, Mingle moved from being a commercial product to becoming a retired piece of Thoughtworks software history: useful in its era, influential for some teams, but no longer an actively supported mainstream platform.
